The San Francisco 49ers received some bad news on Friday after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been ruled out in their Week 4 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles due to ankle injury.

To make matters worse, Raheem Mostert will also remain out with his knee injury (via ESPN's Adam Schefter).

Jimmy Garoppolo has been making progress with his injury since leaving their Week 2 victory over the New York Jets. After missing practice once more on Thursday, however, it is possible that he's nowhere near making a return to the turf.

49ers backup QB Nick Mullens has stepped up in his absence. After throwing only 71 yards and one interception against the Jets in Week 2, he exploded for 343 yards along with one touchdown in Week 3 against the New York Giants. Even with Garoppolo coming back, Mullens will more than likely see increased snaps if his level of play continues against the Eagles on Sunday.

Raheem Mostert, meanwhile, is nursing a mild MCL injury from Week 2 as well. The halfback rushed for 92 yards from eight carries in his latest outing against the Jets before leaving with the injury. He also completed both of his catches for 15 yards and a touchdown for the 49ers.

The 49ers have received good news, however, as tight end George Kittle is set to return to action Sunday. Kittle has been anxious to resume playing with Mullens and will look to make the most of his return against a lowly Eagles squad.

The Eagles are currently 0-2-1 and haven't been able to find the answers in any aspects of their game so far this season.
