San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s wife will have to continue waiting for quarterback Jimmy Garropolo to make his Niners debut. According to 49ers general manager John Lynch, they are in no rush of putting their shiny new signal-caller on the field this season.

John Lynch said as much during an appearance on NBC Bay Area's “49ers Game Plan” show, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports.

“The plan is to continue to get him ready,” Lynch said. “It’s a very different system he played under. A great system, but a different system he played under in New England. And Kyle’s system is complex for a quarterback. There’s a lot of verbiage in every play call. There are a lot of adjustments on every play call that the quarterback controls.

Jimmy Garoppolo was traded by the New England Patriots late October to the 49ers in exchange for a 2018 second-round pick. While it’s widely viewed as a sensible move for the Niners, who are grooming Garoppolo to be their franchise quarterback, it puzzles some people as to why the team is delaying the Eastern Illinois product’s debut in San Francisco threads. After all, Garoppolo’s current contract expires at the end of the season.

On the flipside, it also makes sense not to play Garoppolo this season. San Francisco is not going anywhere with a 1-9 record and it’s arguably better for them to continue using rookie CJ Beathard under center than risk Garoppolo’s health in an already lost season.

Garoppolo was drafted by the Patriots in 2014 but has played in just 17 total games, spending most of his time in Foxborough in the shadow of Tom Brady.
