The San Francisco 49ers appeared to potentially have found their next franchise quarterback with Jimmy Garoppolo under center over the last couple of games.

However, general manager John Lynch revealed during a radio interview with KNBR on Thursday afternoon that the team has yet to conduct any sort of contract negotiations with Garoppolo. (h/t David Fuccillo of Niners Nation)

“We talk to Don Yee, his representative, on a weekly basis. He’s a guy who just, it’s kind of refreshing to talk to him, because the way he’s dealt with Tom, a lot of people have learned, he really wants these guys just to go focus on their business. So, we’ve agreed, ‘hey, there’s gonna be a time for that,’ we keep in regular contact, but no, we haven’t started discussions. I’m sure that will come in due time, and we’re looking forward to that time.”

The 26-year-old has shown much reason for optimism in his first few games with the 49ers. Through three games played, he has racked up 645 yards on 48 of 72 completed passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions while holding a 92.6 passer rating.

What has been most promising is that San Francisco has won each of the last two games that Jimmy Garoppolo has started. He has looked much the part of a quarterback that the organization can build around with his poise in the pocket and ability to lead the team with his arm.

This situation could ultimately lead to the 49ers placing a franchise tag on his next offseason in free agency in order to have a starting point for contract negotiations. It may be just a matter of time after that point where both sides agree to a lucrative long-term deal.
