San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was injured during the team's Week 2 win over the New York Jets, but it appears the Niners dodged a bullet.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo's right ankle is “not that bad,” per Cam Inman of The Mercury News.

Shanhan also noted “Jimmy G” has a chance to play in this weekend's matchup with the New York Giants. For now, Garoppolo is considered week-to-week.

Garoppolo was just one of a number of marquee losses for the Niners on Sunday, though his prognosis is more encouraging than others.

Reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and star edge-rusher Nick Bosa was lost for the year after suffering a torn ACL. Meanwhile, running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman both suffered knee injuries, as did defensive tackle Soloman Thomas.

The defending NFC champions are suddenly facing an early-season test as a result of all the injuries.

Cornerback Richard Sherman and defensive end Dee Ford remain out. All-Pro tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Deebo Samuel figure to return in the near future, though they missed Sunday's game and are also week-to-week at this stage.

Garoppolo might have a chance to play Sunday, though the Niners will likely exhibit caution with respect to their starting quarterback. San Francisco has quite a bit of money invested in Garoppolo, and it would be a major setback were he to exacerbate the ankle issue against the Giants.

In any case, the Niners will have to call on depth as they wait to get back to full strength. Nick Mullens is likely to start at quarterback in the event Garoppolo cannot go on Sunday.
