San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will not practice on Wednesday, rendering his status questionable for this weekend.

Garoppolo sustained an ankle injury during a Week 2 win over the New York Jets, and it seems the sprain is still giving him some issues (via Blue Wire Podcasts' Rob Lowder).

This might just be a precaution at the beginning of the practice week.

The 49ers still have time before making a decision, and the team felt last week a return in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles was realistic.

Simultaneously, San Francisco will not be willing to risk the health of its franchise quarterback, especially not with the team showing signs with Nick Mullens under center.

Mullens had a tremendous performance in Week 3 against the New York Giants, completing 25 of 36 passes for 343 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers swamped New York, winning 36-9 and getting to 2-1 on the year.

There is a comfort with Mullens under center, given he was effective when he took over as the team's starter for the final eight games of the 2018 campaign.

Garoppolo suffered a knee injury in Week 1 of that year, leaving the 49ers scrambling for options. San Francisco initially turned to C.J. Beathard, who lost all of his starts. Mullens took over for Beathard, going 3-5 and throwing for nearly 2,300 yards and 13 touchdowns in his eight starts.

Mullens has the confidence of the organization and his teammates, and he dissected the Giants with ease. Of course, the Eagles' defense poses more dangers, with a tough front seven looking to get pressure in San Francisco's backfield.

Either way, head coach Kyle Shanahan declared “Jimmy G” is the team's starting quarterback when healthy (via San Jose Mercury's Cam Inman).

There is still a chance Garoppolo could play this weekend. But the 49ers will not rush him back with Mullens playing well.
