Jimmy Garoppolo will be back under center for the San Francisco 49ers after a two-week absence due to an ankle injury. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Garoppolo will be the starter for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins, per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Garoppolo started the first two games for the 49ers, but he suffered the ankle injury in Week 2 against the New York Jets, and San Francisco has been cautious with his status in the last two weeks.

Nick Mullens got the start in each of the past two games, leading the 49ers to a win over the New York Giants in Week 3 before struggling in San Francisco's Week 4 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 49ers have slowly been getting healthier. Second-year wide receiver Deebo Samuel made his season debut against the Eagles, and All-Pro tight end George Kittle also returned to action after sitting out in Week 2 and Week 3. But the Niners will be glad to have Garoppolo back under center.

Mullens did a serviceable job replacing “Jimmy G,” but he had a pair of interceptions and also lost a fumble. Mullens was eventually replaced by C.J. Beathard, who subsequently completed 14 of 19 passes for 138 yards.

However, Garoppolo is ready to go, and the 49ers will hope he can get them back on track as they prepare to face the Dolphins.

Garoppolo struggled in a Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, completing just 19 of 33 pass attempts. But he bounced back by completing 14 of 16 attempts–including two scores–prior to sustaining the injury.

Shanahan has been insistent Garoppolo is the 49ers' starter, and the 28-year-old will have the chance to get San Francisco back in the win column on Sunday.
