Jimmy Garoppolo is the current starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, but he'll get an opportunity to play his former team in 2020. Following Thursday night's schedule release, it was revealed that Garoppolo will face the New England Patriots in October.

Of course, Garoppolo was once the backup to Tom Brady in New England, being taken with the No. 62 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was once even considered to be the eventual replacement for Brady.

However, the Patriots decided to send Garoppolo to the 49ers ahead of the trade deadline in 2017. In the trade with New England, San Francisco sent a second-round draft pick to acquire Garoppolo.

Since Garoppolo joined the 49ers, he's yet to have a chance to square off against his former team. Albeit, he will have to do so without Brady being on the other side of the field. Given that, his return to Foxborough does lose a bit of meaning behind it.

Still, the veteran signal-caller will want to prove to the Patriots that they made a mistake trading him. At the same time, he will want to show that the 49ers made the right move by acquiring him a few years ago.

Just this past year, Garoppolo compiled the best statistical season of his career, throwing for 3,978 yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Above all, he was able to lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl. As he hopes to make another Super Bowl run in 2020, Garoppolo will get an opportunity to show up his old squad.
