San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo continues to be in a rocky situation with the team leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. Rumors have been circulating that he could already be out of the building once the team chooses to draft an NFL-ready talent with the third overall pick.

Meanwhile, Garoppolo can still extend his stay in the Bay Area if the Niners decided to pick a developmental quarterback or even a player of another position.

Via Rob Goldberg of Bleacher Report:

“Now, it all depends where they fit here with the No. 3 overall pick. If they go with a player they think can start right away, maybe it's a Mac Jones or a Justin Fields, that could change things with Garoppolo. But if it's a more developmental player like a Trey Lance, that could move them to keep Garoppolo for a year. Because I'm told they've been looking for upgrades. They're comfortable keeping Garoppolo, but the injury history, missing 23 games the last few years, the $24 million salary all major issues here.”

After leading the Niners to an appearance in Super Bowl LIV, Garoppolo's performance immediately went downhill in the 2020 NFL season. Injuries got in the way as he only managed to appear in six contests where he racked up a total of 1,096 passing yards on 94 completions and seven touchdowns.

Without their QB1 along with their other injured starters, the 49ers failed to establish themselves as contenders and merely settled with a 6-10 record. In an effort to bounce back next season, the team's front office immediately went to work as they snagged the third overall pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft to boost their chances of getting top talent.

Armed with a high draft selection, the 49ers still have a good chance of landing one of the highly-touted quarterbacks in Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, or Justin Fields. They can even surprise the rest of the league if they choose to select a developmental prospect like Trey Lance.

Ultimately, the draft will definitely have an impact on Garoppolo's fate and will dictate whether or not he will continue to suit up for the red and gold next season. Regardless of the moves that they are set to make, the 49ers are aiming to bounce back from a tough 2020 season and return to being title contenders once again in 2021.
