The San Francisco 49ers are not expecting to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft to replace Jimmy Garoppolo, according to 49ers GM John Lynch. Lynch joined Tim Kawakami on The Athletic’s “The TK Show” to elaborate further:

“We certainly could [select a QB], I don’t anticipate that right now, but we’re so early in the process, we’ll do what’s best for this team,” Lynch said. “I do wanna make it clear, and I think Kyle and I have been fairly transparent since we’ve been here, we have a lot of belief in Jimmy Garoppolo. Where does that come from? It comes from the sample that we have, and when he’s been out there, we’ve been better. We’ve been successful.”

Garoppolo only played six games for the 49ers this past season after suffering two high ankle sprains—the first in Week 2 against the New York Jets and the second in Week 7 against his former team, the New England Patriots.

After the second sprain, Jimmy G did not play another game in the season after going 3-3 in those games with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

Of course, the 49ers should feel quite confident in Jimmy G after he led the team to a 13-3 record in his first full season with the team, also propelling them to a Super Bowl appearance, in which they lost a highly competitive game to the ascendant Kansas City Chiefs.

While Garoppolo is 30 years old with a history of injuries, the 49ers should feel good about their quarterback situation going forward.
