The San Francisco 49ers were just one dropped interception away from being in this Sunday's Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. A big reason they were able to get to the NFC Championship in the first place was the brilliant play of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is now expected to be traded as the Niners prepare to hand Trey Lance the keys to the offense.

However, if you're asking 49ers legend Joe Montana, he believes the rookie signal-caller isn't ready. In fact, Montana thinks San Fran should keep Jimmy G and says he's spoken to players who are on the same wavelength.

“I think you keep Jimmy until you find somebody else,” Montana said to The Ringer's Kevin Clark. “I don’t think Trey’s ready to play yet, myself, and after talking to some of the players. It’s one of those things that, if you can keep Jimmy healthy, he plays well enough to get you here.”

It's not totally a wild take. After all, Garoppolo played extremely well in 2021 and clutched up in the big moments. However, there's another way to look at it. While the 49ers will be hungry to get back to the latter stages of the postseason, the only way for Lance to grow and develop is by getting first-team reps. There are going to be trials and tribulations, but he's not going to improve like he needs to unless the chances are there.

Also, Garoppolo won't come cheap and the 49ers need that cap space in order to sign weapons to improve their roster as a whole. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what happens with this situation in the offseason.
