The San Francisco 49ers stabilized their quarterback position for the next several seasons on Thursday morning after inking Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year, $137.5 million deal.

During an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday, 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley voiced his confidence in Garoppolo leading the franchise to much success, according to Pro Football Talk.

“The way he came into the huddle and practice when he was there for two days and really just kind of took over,” 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley said on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday. “He was kind of snapping at guys, ‘Hey, pay attention. This is what we’re doing right here.’ There was no kind of feeling-out period with him. He did it in a way too where it didn’t come off as arrogant or anything like that. It was just like I’m asserting myself. This is what we need to do. I think a lot of that comes from who he was job shadowing for the first three or four years of his career over there in New England.

“He’s a great guy. I can’t say enough positive things about him. I think the franchise is in good hands with him at the helm.”

The 26-year-old has quickly instilled much optimism within the organization in his brief time with San Francisco, as he led the 49ers to wins in each of his first five starts while passing for 1,542 yards, the most by a quarterback in franchise history over that span. He also became the first 49ers quarterback since 1970 to win each of his first three road starts.

During this stretch of games, Garoppolo looked extremely competent under center as the vocal leader of the offense, elevating his teammates play to another level. There was a clear change in the culture and mindset around the team that had been lacking prior to his acquisition in early November.

Garoppolo has a prime opportunity to quickly establish himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the game, as his new contract would suggest. It also helps that the 49ers still have a plethora of salary cap space at their disposal to utilize in free agency.
