San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Joe Staley was removed from the team's injury report this week. That's a rather positive sign in regards to a potential return. Even better? Joe Staley literally telling the press he will play against the New York Giants.

“Yeah, I’m playing,” the 49ers left tackle said, via USA Today.

Joe Staley, apparently, has a scar beneath his right eye after suffering a fractured orbital bone Week 8 in Philadelphia.

“Feels fine,” Staley said. “I knew was playing on like Tuesday but I didn’t know if I was supposed to give it away or anything. I was kind of being a butthead to you guys. But yeah, I’m playing. It’s good. I saw the doctor on Tuesday, everything was good.”

This is huge news for a San Francisco team that is still trying to figure some things out as the season progresses.

While the win-loss record leaves plenty to be desired, the Niners have been competitive in most of the games they have played this season.

Also recently announced was that the 49ers will start C.J. Beathard at quarterback against the Giants. This is obviously not a long-term solution at the position, as the gunslinger seems like an obvious stopgap until a former New England Patriots backup is ready, but at least he will be protected by one of the best left tackles of his generation in Staley.

What will be as interesting is the offseason ahead for the lineman. As it is for any veteran at this point in his career, he is as likely to be used as trade bait as he is to finish his career in San Francisco.
