The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly one of Josh Gordon’s top two preferred trade destinations along with the Dallas Cowboys. But while the Cowboys are apparently not interested in pursuing the soon-to-be-ex-Browns wideout, John Lynch and the 49ers are.

Lynch has confirmed that the team has made a call to Cleveland and is doing its due diligence about a possible trade for Gordon, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

The Browns announced they would release the troubled wide receiver on Monday after another incident which diminished their trust in him. However, the belief around the league is that the Browns will trade Gordon before they release him. A handful of teams have already called the Browns about a potential Gordon trade, one of which is apparently the 49ers.

The 49ers could certainly use another playmaker of Gordon’s caliber at receiver. Their other options behind No. 1 wideout Marquise Goodwin are Pierre Garcon, Trent Taylor, who’s just in his second year, and rookies Dante Pettis and Richie James. They also lost running back Jerick McKinnon, who was expected to be a big part of the receiving game, after he tore his ACL.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan should be well-acquainted with Gordon. He coached the wide receiver during his stint as the Browns’ offensive coordinator in 2014. Although, Gordon played just five games that year due to suspensions.

Gordon, who has played just 11 games since his remarkable 1,646 receiving-yard season in 2013 due to suspensions, will obviously be a gamble for whoever decides to acquire him. But with his undoubted talent, he’s a gamble worth taking for a team in need of a playmaker like the 49ers.
