With Rob Gronkowski retiring, there is a new debate about the best active tight end in the NFL. One guy who might be in that discussion is George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers. John Lynch was asked on the KNBR Morning Show on Friday what his thoughts were about Kittle. Lynch had problems giving a definitive answer.

“Well, I believe so,” Lynch initially answered via NBC Sports. “I’m also a believer that you . . . to have those titles you have to lay it down, the kind of year George did, for a number of years.

“So I think I’ll reserve judgment. I have strong feelings on the way he played and the way I feel he is going to (play).”

Lynch's final answer: He thinks George Kittle will get there one day, but he needs to see more.

“So will kind of say, ‘No,’ for now. But I certainly believe he has that in him. If he puts up another season like last year, I think we can start talking about titles like that.”

Last season George Kittle burst onto the scene, catching 88 passes for 1,377 yards and five touchdowns. Even if he has another big season, he still has tough competition for the top tight end spot. When Greg Olsen is healthy he is one of the best. Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs is an elite tight end year in and year out.
