Although there had been plenty of speculation regarding his uncertain future in the NFL, tight end Jordan Reed will get another opportunity to get his career back on track after signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

Reed has been no stranger to the injured reserve in recent years and missed the entire 2019 campaign while recovering from yet another concussion. He admits he thought about retiring until he watched the Super Bow, via Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports.

“I definitely thought about hanging it up after last season,” Reed said. “It was when I saw the Super Bowl that really kind of ignited me again. I want to play in the big games again. God blessed me to be here and a part of this great team. He gave me the opportunity to be in this situation.”

Reed adds that the change of scenery has already paid some dividends.

“It's the most fun I've had playing football ever,” Reed mentioned in regards to the 49ers. “Honestly. I don't know if it's because I didn't play all last season or what, but since I've been out there, I've been having a blast and I'm really grateful.”

Reed's connection to head coach Kyle Shanahan from his days with the Washington Football Team has helped provide a sense of familiarity in San Francisco. Meanwhile, the high expectations going into the 2020 NFL season has solidified his desire to potentially play in big games.

While the 49ers are still taking a cautious approach with Reed's activity in training camp, tight end George Kittle's absence has opened the door for an uptick in reps. Given all the injuries this team has suffered with their receiving corps this offseason, Shanahan is hoping the veteran can emerge into another option for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the passing game.
