The San Francisco 49ers still utilize a fullback in their offense, but they use theirs in an uncanny way. In the second quarter of Super Bowl 54, Kyle Juszczyk became the first fullback to score a receiving touchdown in a Super Bowl in the last 25 years, per Ed Werder of ESPN.

The last fullback to achieve that feat was also a member of the 49ers. During San Francisco's Super Bowl in the 1994 season (the Super Bowl being played in January of 1995), William Floyd caught a five-yard touchdown from Steve Young.

This time around, Juszczyk was able to create some separation on his route to tie the game at 10 in the first half. Since being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, Juszczyk has been used as a versatile offensive weapon for the 49ers.

Despite being listed as a fullback, Juszczyk was able to record 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 2019 for the 49ers. The veteran fullback is among the shortlist of fullbacks that are beginning to bring back the position that was popular in the early 2000s.

For years, Kyle Shanahan is known for being one of the most innovative offensive minds in the NFL. After all, there is a reason for Shanahan being able to lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl in just his third season as the head coach.

Not many coaches would think of using Juszczyk in a receiving role in an offense, let alone using him in a prominent receiving role in the most important game of the season. The 49ers do things differently.

The score by Juszczyk was able to tie the game before halftime and gives the 49ers some life heading into the second half. Regardless of the outcome of the game, Juszczyk can say he was part of history in the Super Bowl.
