The San Francisco 49ers are one of few teams in the NFL that has an assistant coach that is female. Katie Sowers is an offensive assistant for the 49ers and she describes a day in the life of an NFL assistant.

Sowers went on “The Football Girl Podcast” hosted by Melissa Jacobs and talked about various topics. Here's an excerpt from the podcast.

“It’s also a lifestyle. You get in around five in the morning, doing cut-ups, breaking down film. Everyone that we’re playing I’ll go through all of their games, breaking down film. If we’re playing Arizona, I’ll go through all the Arizona defensive clips since I’m on the offensive side of the ball. I work with the scout team during practices, making sure the scout team is looking just like what we’re going to see on Sunday. Helping with receiver rotations, helping receivers learn the playbook, putting together concepts – Kyle has so many complex concepts, one of my ways of learning those concepts myself was putting together a packet of 2-man concepts, 3-man concepts, 5-man concepts, putting that together and putting it on paper so we can use it as a tool for our new coaching staff and the players. It's a full lifestyle.”

Some fans may not realize how tireless coaches work during their careers. Head coaches and assistant coaches alike stay up late or get up early to get their work done.

Kyle Shanahan is known to be a bright offensive mind in the NFL. As a result, his staff likely goes in more depth than other offenses.

There are tons of coaches for very specific aspects of the offense and defense. Furthermore, there are coaches who are hired to focus on just red zone possessions.

Regardless, assistant coaches are asked to do a lot more than fans are led to believe.

Assistant coaches are people too!
