San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is no stranger to what it takes to building a successful NFL team, and has his 49ers prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft, he seems to have just the type of players he’d like already in mind.

Speaking to ESPN ahead of the draft, Shanahan and the 49ers front-office have seemingly been discussing what positional groups the team should be looking to target, and the defensive line is a major group that they’ll be picking.

“You can never have too (many) D-linemen,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “…They are very hard to find. And when you get guys who are difference-makers, those guys can change the game as much as anyone just on their own by rushing the passer.”

Of course, Shanahan won’t be the only coach looking to stock up on defensive talent, but his strategy could go a long way to helping the 49ers.

After acquiring Dee Ford in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s clear that the team is looking to bolster its defensive presence, and it will be key to how well they perform in a crowded NFC West.

“I think what we want to do, I think you want to be great at something,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said. “You want to have — there’s certain positions. … You got to have the quarterback and you got to have the guys to knock them down.”

Currently slated to have the second overall pick in the NFL Draft, the 49ers should be able to pick from pretty much anyone, and if a quarterback should go first, they’ll have the option to draft any defensive player they’d like.
