A handful of teams expressed interest in Josh Gordon, when it was made known by the New England Patriots that they were looking to trade the embattled wide receiver. Among those who considered acquiring Gordon via a trade were Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Shanahan revealed that the 49ers did take a long look at Gordon before the team ultimately changed direction while also admitting that the New England Patriots simply had a better deal for the Cleveland Browns, per Niners Nation.

Shanahan on Josh Gordon: Any time a good player comes available you look into all that stuff. I feel very good with our current group, we looked into it, went a different way. Patriots “did more than we did”

New England won the Josh Gordon bid war and it only cost them a 2019 fifth-round pick, though, the Pats could get a seventh-round pick also if the wideout gets an active label for fewer than 10 games, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

As for the 49ers, they could have used someone like Gordon. For one, their No. 1 wide receiver Marquise Goodwin is currently dealing with a quad injury. Gordon, assuming he’s healthy, can be a dangerous weapon downfield target for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

It’s also possible that Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers simply did not think that having a player like Gordon who’s had a chequered past is worth adding to their roster.
