Trey Lance was neither great nor especially bad in his NFL debut with the San Francisco 49ers during last Saturday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. It's fair to say, though, that he provided electricity which the crowd at Levi's Stadium down in Santa Clara fed off, especially when he hooked up with wide receiver Trent Sherfield for an 80-yard touchdown score. For Kyle Shanahan, he appears to be regretting not letting Lance have more time on the field, per Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

But Trey, what he showed in that game is, you know, I wish I could have left them there longer. I know he enjoys playing and he's only been able to play one game in over a year, but I think it was good for him to get out. I think he started out good, got a little excited sometimes which he does. And you get a little excited, some of your technique and stuff you lose which will be fun to watch with him. Trey's a guy who's tough on himself and loves to correct things and since we've had him he's been very good at correcting mistakes.”

Against the Chiefs, Lance completed five of 14 throws for 128 passing yards. He was the only quarterback among the three used by the 49ers to have driven the offense into scoring a touchdown in that game. The 49ers might not be openly admitting it, but Lance could have just made a stronger case to be the starter for the team as soon as Week 1 of the regular season.

That's not going to be an easy decision to make. Perhaps the 49ers will just have to continue observing how Lance and Jimmy Garropolo will perform the rest of the way before the real season kicks off in September.
