The San Francisco 49ers have been plagued by injuries so far this season, but one of their key contributors on offense is returning to practice this week. While the 49ers will have to ease him back into the groove of things, Kyle Shanahan spoke about the return of Deebo Samuel.

“He’s been champing at the bit to get back,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports. “I know he’s really made a lot of progress here in the last 14 days. I know he’s pumped to practice. I know he’s pumped to play.”

Samuel has been unable to suit up for San Francisco this season due to a broken foot he suffered during the offseason. The second-year was forced to undergo surgery, sidelining him for the first three weeks of the season after being placed on injured reserve.

After spending time on injured reserve, Samuel is slated to practice this week, but Shanahan isn't ready to say he'll play in Week 4.

“We’ll see how he is,” Shanahan said. “I know he conditioned right. I know he’s healthy. I know he’s feeling good.

It's important to note, since he underwent surgery in June, Samuel hasn't practiced with the 49ers since the Super Bowl in February. Therefore, Shanahan realizes that the team has to be cautious with how they deploy him in practice.

“But Wednesday will be his first time at football practice since Super Bowl week of last year. So we have to take that into account, also. We’ll see how he goes in these three days, then we’ll evaluate that at the end of the week.”

During Sunday's game against the New York Giants, the 49ers witnessed Jordan Reed sustain a knee sprain, which will keep him sidelined for six-to-eight weeks. While San Francisco hasn't had much luck on the injury front, at least Deebo Samuel is set to return really soon.
