The San Francisco 49ers boasted one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL in 2019 and Kyle Shanahan is aware of who was better. While addressing the media on Tuesday, Shanahan made a Lamar Jackson inspired joke about how the 49ers can improve their running game.

Of course, Shanahan is referring to the Baltimore Ravens quarterback as to why Baltimore led the NFL in rushing this season. On the other hand, he jokingly exclaimed that Jimmy Garoppolo needs to improve his speed this offseason.

Over the course of the season, San Francisco — under Kyle Shanahan — deployed a multi-faceted backfield with Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert, and Matt Breida. Just those three running backs alone combined for 1,939 rushing yards in 2019.

As a result of having a talented group of running backs, the 49ers averaged 144.1 rushing yards per game. That was good enough for second-best in the NFL — only behind the Ravens who averaged a whopping 206 yards per game. Due to their imposing running game, San Francisco and Kyle Shanahan were able to advance to the Super Bowl.

In just the three seasons that he's been head coach, Kyle Shanahan has implemented a run-first offense in San Francisco. When watching the 49ers, it's evident that Shanahan's offense is complex in the way they are able to create running lanes.

What would be interesting is to see what Kyle Shanahan could achieve with a mobile quarterback. It would be exhilarating to see what he would dial-up for a quarterback similar to Jackson.

While it's intriguing to think about, San Francisco and Kyle Shanahan committed to Garoppolo for the 2020 season. Regardless of who is under center, it's safe to say the 49ers rushing attack will be just fine next season.
