It’s still uncertain whether San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle will play or not when the team players the New York Giants on Sunday. But there’s still a chance that he can suit up for the Niners in their Week 3 matchup, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Kittle is still dealing with a bone bruise and sprain in the same knee and missed San Francisco’s Week 2 game against the New York Jets, which was won, 31-13. But there is a chance that the 26-year-old tight end can return against the Giants, since he was with the team when they made the trip for the game. He was also on the field when the 49ers practiced on Wednesday, although in a limited capacity.

Rapoport compares Kittle’s injury to the one he had in the 2019 season, which caused him to miss San Francisco’s Weeks 10 and 11 games. Kittle suffered the knee injury in their opening game against the Arizona Cardinals. The two-time Pro Bowler left the game due to a sprained MCL and recorded just one reception and nine yards in a game the 49ers would go on to lose, 24-20.

Much will be expected of Kittle this season for San Francisco after he signed a five-year, $75 million contract extension in the offseason to become the league’s highest-paid tight end. His possible return to their lineup against New York is certainly welcome news for their offense, especially with running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman expected to miss time due to injuries suffered last week against the Jets.
