Former Ole Miss wide receivers A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf found NFL homes over the weekend while former South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel did the same. With Brown landing with the Tennessee Titans and Metcalf with the Seattle Seahawks, Samuel will attempt to make a name for himself as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Although the latter player in this trio received much less praise than Brown and Metcalf, some believe that Samuel is actually the best of the bunch.

“(South Carolina wide receiver) Deebo Samuel is a stud with the football in his hands,” said an NFL scout of the 49ers’ second-round pick, via The Athletic. “His main issue has been injuries. Plus, he has struggled with his weight in the past. But he should immediately be one of their better playmakers.”

While the tandem of former Ole Miss wideouts came off the board in the second round, many originally had them pegged as the top two pass catchers in this year's NFL Draft pool. However, Samuel will now have his chance to shine in San Francisco and put all of the doubters to shame.

“Deebo Samuel is going to eat in San Francisco,” adds NFL Draft scout Steve Frederick. “Perfect landing spot. This is simple. The 49ers staff coached Samuel at the Senior Bowl. Samuel dominated that week, so the team has no excuse to miss on this pick. Especially when you factor in that they passed on several bigger-name guys such as Ole Miss wideouts A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf. I like the pick, but Samuel is going to be asked to produce immediately.”

It is also worth noting that Baltimore Ravens wideout Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was the first wide receiver selected in the 2019 NFL Draft.
