San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens showed some glimpses of being a solid NFL quarterback last season but he is not guaranteed a spot on this years team. Mullens will be competing with C.J Beathard for the right to back up Jimmy Garrapolo and that is something and that is something former Southern Miss star is embracing.

“It doesn’t matter what you did in the past,” Mullens said via SF Chronicle. “On the door it says, ‘What’s Important Now.’ And that’s what I’ve been focusing on and will continue to do every single day. What’s important now: I want to be best at QB drills we did with the coaches today. I embrace it. Competition brings out the best in people.”

When Mullens was forced to take over for Beathard who suffered a broken wrist and many expected the 49ers would be in a lot of trouble. Instead, he led the 49ers to a blowout victory over the Oakland Raiders in his first start and he became a bit of folk hero.

None of what happened last year matters now and this could be one of the more intriguing backup quarterback battles in all of the league.

The good news for Mullens is the 49ers weren't the only team to take notice of what he did last year. Even if the 49ers decide to keep Beathard on the roster there is a very good chance Mullens will be able to catch on somewhere else for a team that is looking for a solid backup.
