San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle had one of the greatest sophomore campaigns we have ever seen this past year, setting the NFL single-season record for yards by a tight end with 1,377 yards to go along with 88 receptions and five touchdowns.

Not surprisingly, he was Pro Football Focus' highest-graded tight end from 2018, edging out O.J. Howard of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

Of course, Howard ahead of Kansas City Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce for the No. 2 spot is very odd, but let's not ignore just how dominant Kittle was during his second year in the league.

The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Iowa, was originally selected by the 49ers in the fifth round (146th pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He played in 15 games during his rookie campaign, catching 43 passes for 515 yards and a couple of scores.

Oddly enough, Kittle was not all that productive in college, as his best year at Iowa came during his senior season, when he snared 22 balls for 314 yards while reaching the end zone six times.

Overall during his four years with the Hawkeyes, Kittle registered 48 catches for 737 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he basically doubled himself up in catches and yards during his second NFL season alone.

Meanwhile, San Francisco is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which it won just four games and has not made the playoffs since the 2013-14 campaign. The three-year run between 2011 and 2013 when the Niners made three straight postseason appearances represents the franchise's only trips to the playoffs since 2003.
