Many people across the wide world of sports are still perplexed about the benching of New England Patriots starting cornerback Malcolm Butler by head coach Bill Belichick for the team's 41-33 upset loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

After getting zero defensive snaps on Sunday, Butler's future with the Patriots is completely up in the air with his upcoming status as an unrestricted free agent. With Butler reportedly ready to leave, San Francisco 49ers veteran wide receiver Pierre Garcon took to Twitter on Tuesday to make a pitch to Butler.

Garcon was quick to mention Butler's former Patriots teammate in current Niners starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was traded mid-season from New England to San Francisco.

After they finished the season on a five-game winning streak, the Niners (6-10) certainly have a lot of young talent on both sides of the ball and a good deal of cap space to spend during this offseason's free agency frenzy.

On Tuesday afternoon, Butler released a written statement on Twitter denying media reports that he was benched due to disciplinary reasons while speaking highly of the Patriots organization.

“I want to thank Mr. (Robert) Kraft, the Kraft family, and my coaches for giving me an opportunity to play for one of the most successful organizations in sports. I also thank my teammates, as we have won a lot of games together, and all I know is winning! I have always respected everyone at the New England Patriots organization, from Custodians, staff, and coach (Bill) Belichick,” Butler tweeted. “In each of my four years, we have achieved Conference Championships or Super Bowl victories since I arrived in New England. All of this would not be possible without thanking some of the best fans in the world who have supported me from day one and, always let me know how much they appreciated me here in New England.”

It will be interesting to see whether Niners management makes a run at Butler once the NFL free agency period begins in mid-March.
