Apparently, the San Francisco 49ers have not done enough to engage running back Raheem Mostert in contract negotiations.

Mostert officially asked the team to be traded on Wednesday, per his agent Brad Tessler.

Mostert signed a three-year deal prior to the start of the 2019 season, but he hoped to sign another extension with the Niners after a breakout campaign.

Initially, it seemed the team was taking steps towards offering him a new contract. Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported the Niners had “discussed” an extension for Mostert.

However, Tessler made it clear he and his client have not come close to their desired number from San Francisco.

Mostert was the most productive member of the 49ers' backfield last season. He rushed for 772 yards on 5.6 yards per carry in 2019 while also racking up nearly 13 yards per reception.

This success carried into the playoffs, most notably during the NFC Championship game. Mostert steamrolled the Green Bay Packers, rushing for 220 yards and four touchdowns in a blowout victory.

It remains to be seen whether the Niners would entertain trading Mostert. On the one hand, San Francisco still has a crowded backfield, even after trading Matt Breida.

Jerick McKinnon is returning after missing the last two seasons due to injury, and Jeff Wilson is still in the mix. Tevin Coleman also has obvious value going forward. Still, McKinnon is an injury risk, and Coleman dealt with some knocks last season, too. He also had a far lower success rate than Mostert.

Maybe the 49ers will make a more concerted effort to extend Mostert. Alternatively, perhaps they decide any of their available backs will still have success running behind a sturdy offensive line instead.
