The Santa Clara District Attorney's office announced Thursday that San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been charged with three felonies in connection with his February arrest, per ESPN.

Foster has been charged with domestic violence, forcefully attempting to prevent a victim from reporting a crime and possession of an assault weapon. He was also charged with misdemeanor possession of a large-capacity weapon magazine. If found guilty of those charges, Foster faces up to 11 years in prison.

Foster has been accused of physically assaulting his live-in girlfriend, leaving her bruised and with a ruptured eardrum. Foster also allegedly dragged her by her hair, physically threw her out of the house and punched her in the head eight to 10 times.

The 49ers have issued a statement acknowledging the charges against their player.

“We will continue to follow this serious matter. Reuben is aware that his place in our organization is under great scrutiny and will depend on what is learned through the legal process.”

Foster, 24, was a late first-round pick by the 49ers in 2017. He’s coming off a successful rookie year where he had 72 tackles (second on the team) in just 10 games.

However, Foster has been unable to shake the off-field incidents which were a significant factor in him falling in the draft. Prior to the incident with his girlfriend, Foster was also arrested in Alabama for second-degree marijuana possession.

Even if he is not found guilty of his domestic violence charge, Foster is still subject to possible discipline from the NFL, which could include a lengthy suspension for the upcoming season.
