The San Francisco 49ers do not expect good news regarding quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s knee injury. However, they do have some relatively good news about the injury to another big-name star in Richard Sherman.

According to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo! Sports, an MRI revealed that Sherman has a mild calf strain which will likely keep him out for 2-3 weeks.

Sherman, who had been dealing with a heel injury last week, had to exit the Niners’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs with a lower leg issue. Given Sherman’s history, there were fears that it may have been connected to his Achilles injury from last season. While losing Sherman for a few weeks will be a blow, it’s still promising that it isn’t something much more serious.

With Sherman sidelined, the 49ers will have to rely on their other cornerbacks, namely K’Waun Williams and Jimmie Ward, to take up more snaps alongside Ahkello Witherspoon in the secondary.

The 49ers secondary has been smoked over the last couple of weeks. After Matthew Stafford lit them up for 347 yards and three touchdowns, Patrick Mahomes predictably delivered a similarly strong game with 314 yards and three TDs.

Sherman’s absence likely won’t help. The 49ers’ first assignment without Sherman will be Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers.
