The San Francisco 49ers are on the receiving end of a one-sided affair against the upstart Kanas City Chiefs in Week 3 action on Sunday afternoon.

The 49ers suffered a critical blow to their secondary in the contest with Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman being declared out due to a lower leg injury, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Sherman had entered the game with some question marks with his health as he was dealing with some issues concerning his heel, but he was able to give it a go for the game. He had performed quite well to begin the game that saw him make a strong play to break up what would have been a deep touchdown reception for Chiefs wideout Tyreek Hill. He had shown no hindrance on the play but headed to the locker room at halftime with issues stemming from his nagging heel.

This is a significant loss as Sherman is their only proven talent in the secondary and best option at the position. The fact that he has been declared out for the contest should draw some level of concern about the severity of the injury, especially since it is near his surgically-repaired Achilles tendon. The 49ers will likely undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the ailment that could possibly lead to him being sidelined for a lengthy period of time.

In the meantime, the onus will be more on the 49ers offense to carry the load with Sherman out of the mix. The hope has been that he can step in to be an anchor with that unit of the defense while proving that he can continue to play at a high level despite making his return from a career-altering injury. There should be more clarity on the status of his health over the next few days.
