Richard Sherman has played in three Super Bowls in his NFL career. While he won his first appearance as a member of the Seattle Seahawks back in February 2014, the last two have ended in gut-wrenching defeats.

The year after his first championship, Sherman and the Seahawks were dealt a devastating loss at the hands of the New England Patriots after Russell Wilson was intercepted in the end zone. Five years later, Sherman returned to the NFL's biggest stage with the San Francisco 49ers and saw his team blow a 10-point fourth quarter lead in a 31-20 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers' typically stout defense was shredded by Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs down the stretch, giving up 21 unanswered points in a flash.

Afterward, Sherman did not have many words to explain what had happened, only saying that San Francisco simply made too many miscues.

“We’re still a great defense. Just didn’t execute our game,” said Sherman, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “It was just mistakes — self-inflicted.”

Sherman himself made one of those mistakes, as he was beat by Kansas City wide receiver Sammy Watkins for a 44-yard gain to set up the go-ahead touchdown for the Chiefs late in the fourth quarter.

The Pro Bowl cornerback did say that Watkins “made a play,” but it also seems clear that he feels both he and the rest of the Niners defense could have done more to prevent the collapse.

Now, Sherman will have a whole offseason to think about what went wrong.
