San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan appears pretty content with how the team's front office chose to upgrade its roster as a result of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Nonetheless, many have continued to wonder why the 49ers did not upgrade the team's secondary with a litany of talented players coming off the board throughout this past weekend.

“You try to improve your team wherever you can,” Shanahan recently said, via 247 Sports. “We were in some good draft spots this year where we could draft an edge rusher that definitely we felt was better than the guys we had with the second pick in the draft. We didn’t necessarily feel that in all areas last year. We went with a different direction with a tackle [Mike McGlinchey], knowing we were going to have to replace one [Trent Brown] a year from then.”

The 49ers already have a solid secondary in-house with a slew of veteran players already on the roster ahead of the upcoming season.

“It’s not the easiest thing in the world to draft a guy who can come in and beat out Richard Sherman, Jason Verrett, Ahkello (Witherspoon), Tarvarius Moore,” Shanahan continued. “Those aren’t easy things. Then you look into other positions and stuff, so that goes to each round. It’s not the easiest to go find a safety who can beat out Jimmie Ward, or Tartt, or the two guys we drafted in the last two years with Marcell, Colbert, and Exum who stepped in and did a good job for us who’s played on other NFL teams too.”

Unfortunately for the 49ers, the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and Arizona Cardinals all got better this offseason as well.
