The San Francisco 49ers acquired offensive tackle Trent Williams in a trade with the Washington Redskins on Friday, and now, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the 49ers will likely restructure his contract.

Schefter adds that Williams will report and will play for San Francisco next season.

Williams is currently slated to earn $12.5 million in 2020.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oklahoma, was originally selected by the Redskins with the fourth overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

It didn't take Williams long to establish himself as one of the best offensive linemen in football, as he made the Pro Bowl as soon as his third season and made seven straight Pro Bowl appearances between 2012 and 2018.

However, last offseason, Williams' relationship with Washington soured after he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth in his head. He first reported the growth to the Redskins in 2013, but their medical staff told him it was nothing to worry about at the time.

Due to the way Washington handled the situation, Williams refused to participate in the club's offseason program last spring and summer and was ultimately placed on the did-not-report list in July.

The Redskins attempted to trade Williams between training camp and the Week 8 trade deadline this past season, but they did not like any of the offers they received.

Williams attempted to return to the field in late October, but his comeback was thwarted when he experienced discomfort when trying to put his helmet on as a result of post-surgical soreness.
