Mohamed Sanu has been released by the New England Patriots, allowing him to sign elsewhere for the 2020 season. John Lynch, former All-Pro safety and current general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, didn't close the door on signing Sanu.

In a sit down on the “Murph and Mac Show on KNBR,” Lynch spoke about San Francisco's possible interest in Sanu:

“We’re actually pretty pleased with our with our depth at wide receiver and it may be something where early on in the season we’re not at full strength, but we like the way the group has come around,” Lynch said. “Sanu has been released so I am free to talk about him. He’s an excellent football player, one that has history with our staff and so I think when a good football player becomes available, we’re always interested and we’re always looking to see if they can help.

Last season, the Patriots traded a second-round pick for Sanu in hopes he could provide a spark on offense. It's safe to say that Bill Belichick made one of his few blunders acquiring Sanu, as the veteran wideout caught just 26 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown in eight games.

On the other hand, the 49ers are already hurting at wide receiver with multiple guys dealing with injuries. Altogether, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and now Tavon Austin are all sidelined with injuries. While he won't rule out adding Sanu, Lynch is confident in San Francisco's current group at wide receiver.

“But I will say that we’re probably more comfortable than most people think at the wide receiver position. What we’ve seen throughout this offseason, you know, leaves us leaves us really excited about the group so it has to fit and we’ll see where that goes. . . . I think we feel a little stronger than maybe the outside world believes we should or do.”

Of course, San Francisco's interest in adding a wide receiver is dependent on Samuel and Aiyuk's status. But if the 49ers do make a move at wide receiver soon, Sanu may be an option for the defending NFC Champions.
