Veteran safety Eric Reid is among the many free agents still looking for new contracts, but if he wants to play again for the only NFL team he has suited up in his NFL career, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan wants him to know that their door is still open for him.

However, Shanahan has made it clear that such a reunion is not a guarantee that Reid will be able to serve as a starter. Furthermore, according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic, the 49ers are only willing to offer a minimum wage for Reid and that Shanahan has said that he doesn’t think the 26-year-old secondary piece is keen on taking on a backup role on a token salary.

Kyle Shanahan says he’s still interested in bringing Eric Reid back in a backup, league-minimum-type role behind Tartt. He said he doesn’t think Reid is interested in that type of role.

The fact that Reid continues to be without an employer this close to the 2018 NFL season only adds fuel to rumors that teams are conspiring to keep the safety away from the league. It could be remembered that Reid was among the first set of players who followed quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s example of kneeling during the national anthem.

Last season, Eric Reid appeared in 13 games (12 starts) with San Francisco, recording two interceptions and 67 total tackles. For now, the 49ers look set with Jaquiski Tartt as their starting strong safety in place of Reid.

Reid was selected 18th overall by San Francisco in the 2013 NFL Draft.
