The San Francisco 49ers will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl in the NFL's 100th season.

It wasn't easy getting to the Super Bowl for the 49ers. Last season, they finished the year 4-12. They had the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft and weren't considered a serious Super Bowl threat. It turns out, they were.

The 49ers going from worst to first is nothing new. This is actually the second time in franchise history that San Francisco has gone to the Super Bowl after losing 10 or more games in the season before.

In 1980, the 49ers went 6-10. The next season, they went 13-3 and defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI. That Super Bowl win would spark one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history, as they would go on to win five Super Bowls through the 1994 season.

Flash forward to 2020, and the 49ers look the part of another dominant team. However, this iteration of the Bay Area's finest is different. In contrast to Bill Walsh's West Coast offense, the 49ers win games based on their stingy defense and ground game that takes many concepts from Walsh's playbook.

The 49ers were able to build their dominant defense in large part due to their lack of success leading up to 2019. They selected defensive linemen in four of the last five drafts, capped off by taking rookie superstar edge rusher Nick Bosa at No. 2 overall in 2019.

The 49ers will face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 in Miami.
