The San Francisco 49ers will be coming out of their bye week having to sign a wide receiver that spent time with the team during training camp. According to Mike Garafolo, San Francisco is planning on re-signing wide receiver Jordan Matthews.

Matthews is heading back to the Bay Area due to rookie Jalen Hurd heading for injured reserve. Hurd has been dealing with a back fracture since the beginning of the season.

As for Matthews, the veteran receiver already has prior experience in Kyle Shanahan's offense, as he played in the preseason for the 49ers. With that in mind, don't expect Matthews to have anything but a depth role on this team in Week 5 and beyond.

Before Matthews arrived in San Francisco, he spent four of his five previous seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. But if you ask Eagles fans, they'll tell you how inconsistent that he is as a wide receiver.

Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Matthews has totaled 270 receptions, 3,255 yards, and 22 touchdowns. Now, in San Francisco, he will join a receiving corps that includes Dante Pettis, Marquise Goodwin, Deebo Samuel, and Richie James.

The 49ers don't play until Monday night against the Cleveland Browns, so Matthews will get an extra day to get into shape. Again, Shanahan likely signed the former Eagles wideout due to his knowledge of the offense and he can provide depth at the position.

Along with Hurd heading to injured reserve, Jason Verrett has reportedly been placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

The veteran cornerback's career has been riddled with injuries; missing 55 games since 2014 due to injury.
