The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed defensive back Jimmie Ward on a one-year deal, according to NFL insider Adam Caplan.

Ward is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played just nine games as a result of a broken forearm that landed him on the injured reserve list in late November. During the time he was on the field, Ward registered 24 tackles and a forced fumble.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Northern Illinois, was originally selected by the 49ers in the first round (30th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He appeared in just eight contests during his rookie season due to a foot injury and finished with 20 tackles. Then, the following year, Ward participated in all 16 games, making eight starts and totaling 54 tackles, a sack, an interception, six passes defended, and a defensive touchdown while rotating between cornerback and safety.

The Racine, Wi. native then proceeded to play in 11 games in 2016, missing five games due to a fractured clavicle. He ended up totaling 52 tackles, a sack, a pick, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 12 passes defended.

Ward then went on to play in seven games in 2017, once again missing extensive time due to an injury. This time, it was a broken forearm that sidelined him for most of the year. He recorded 32 stops and a fumble recovery.

The 49ers won just four games this past season and have not made the playoffs since 2013. San Francisco has failed to post a winning record ever since.
