The San Francisco 49ers were handed their second loss of the 2019 NFL season by the Baltimore Ravens in Week 13. Fortunately, it seems that their special teams will finally get back one of its most integral pieces.

The 49ers announced they have parted ways with kicker Chase McLaughlin while signing wide receiver Chris Thompson to the practice squad in place of offensive lineman Will Holden:

The 49ers have waived K Chase McLaughlin. The team also signed WR Chris Thompson to the team’s practice squad and released OL Will Holden from the practice squad.

The move hardly comes as any surprise since McLaughlin had been brought in to serve as a replacement for kicker Robbie Gould after he injured his quad during practice heading into Week 10. San Francisco was optimistic that he would be available for their high-profile matchup against Baltimore, however, it appears they opted to take a cautious approach.

McLaughlin did a solid job of filling in for Gould and was able to take full advantage by hitting seven of his eight field-goal attempts. Of course, his one miss did come at a crucial moment in overtime versus the Seattle Seahawks. Regardless, the rookie has still managed to put together a notable body of work heading into free agency.

Meanwhile, Thompson began his career with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2017 campaign.

He enjoyed modest production in the passing game as well as special teams before he was waived and started his revolving door in San Francisco.
