Jalen Hurd is one of the most uniquely talented rookies in the NFL. If he lives up to his player comparison at NFL.com, though, the San Francisco 49ers would have reason to be both thrilled and disappointed after selecting the Baylor University wide receiver in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Hurd, who played running back at the University of Tennessee before transferring to Baylor, is compared to free-agent wide receiver Terrelle Pryor by NFL.com's Lance Zierlien. Given that both players are absolutely huge for receivers and played different positions in college, the comparison makes sense on the surface. Like Pryor, it will undoubtedly take awhile before Hurd is able to grasp the complexities of playing wide receiver at the professional level. Also like Pryor, there's a chance he ultimately becomes little more than a big-play threat who struggles to cement himself as a reliable target in the NFL.

After the draft, San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan raved about Hurd's versatility.

“I mean, he can do about everything,” he said of Hurd, per 49erswebzone.com. “I mean, I think if he would have stayed a running back, I think he would have gotten drafted as an NFL running back. Today he got drafted as an NFL receiver, kind of. I believe if he tried to play tight end he would have gotten drafted as an NFL tight end. That's a pretty unique thing to have. I don't remember being able to say that about any player I've studied before. So, it's neat to be able to do that and he can help us out in a lot of different ways.”

Pryor, who played quarterback at Ohio State University and was drafted by the Oakland Raiders as a quarterback, switched to wide receiver his fourth year in the league. In 2016, his second year at the position, he blew up with 77 catches for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns. But Pryor has proven unable to reach that level of success in the interim, playing for three teams over the last two seasons and currently finding himself without a job.

Will Hurd's career follow a similarly wayward path? Only time will tell.
