Former Detroit Lions cornerback Teez Tabor has resurfaced. The San Francisco 49ers are signing the former second-round pick to their practice squad, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The 49ers worked out Tabor and Savion Smith on Monday, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Tabor, a former Florida Gator, lasted two seasons in Detroit after they took him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Tabor is a limited athlete, recording a 4.62 second 40-yard-dash, 31-inch vertical and nine 225-pound bench-press reps at the NFL Combine. His lack of explosive athleticism showed during his time in Detroit.

In 2018, Tabor allowed a 143.3 passer rating in coverage, as quarterbacks passed 17 for 27 for 335 yards and three touchdowns against him, according to Pro Football Reference. He did so while playing in 12 games and starting four. Passers recorded 266 air yards and 69 after the catch on Tabor.

Before entering the NFL, Tabor was lauded as a potential first-round selection. Then his combine tanked his stock. Before the combine, NFL.com's Lance Zierlein compared him to Darius Slay, saying:

“Tabor has terrific size and quickness, but it will be interesting to see how he times in the forty. While he has some lapses in judgement and awareness in coverage, his nine career interceptions didn't happen by accident. He is a pure cover corner with the ability to pattern match around the field, but don't expect him to be a plus tackler in run support. He has the traits of a first-round cornerback, but some teams may be put off by some of his annoyances.”

Tabor hasn't lived up to the hype, but he's yet to turn 24. The 49ers hope they can develop him into an NFL cornerback on their practice squad. If any injury happens on their 53-man, he may earn a call-up.
