The San Francisco 49ers were rumored to be making some significant changes under center this offseason. It appears they did not stop at quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Athletic's Michael Lombardi said on The GM Shuffle podcast that the 49ers reportedly turned down multiple trade offers for backup quarterback Nick Mullens:

“There was about three teams trying to trade for Kyle Allen,” Lombardi said. “You know what's interesting about the Kyle Allen trade? This is really interesting. The 49ers got a bunch of phone calls — when I say a bunch, a couple of teams — on Nick Mullens, the backup quarterback in San Francisco. Nick Mullens. They were asking about him, and they turned down every trade offer for Nick Mullens. They wouldn't trade him.

The prospect of the 49ers being so steadfast about keeping Mullens is certainly an intriguing one. After all, they have made it clear that Garoppolo is their franchise quarterback. It seems that they are just as adamant about keeping him around as the backup.

Mullens had stepped as the starter when the 49ers suffered a string of injuries under center during the 2018 campaign. He wound up finishing the season with 2,277 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Although Garoppolo's health kept him off the field during the 2019 NFL season, it appears he was still able to make quite the impression during practice.

The 49ers know full well the luxury of having a surplus of options under center in the event of an injury. Perhaps the offers that were made were not enough to have them part ways with some peace of mind.
