The Cleveland Browns made a splash with the acquisition of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason. It appears they had some staunch competition from the San Francisco 49ers for his services.

It is no secret that the New York Giants wanted quite the return for Beckham. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, their asking price was a bit too steep for San Francisco:

“We were definitely in it,” York said. “We were aggressive. But I think (the Giants) wanted different things than we had to offer. I think it would have been very hard for us to just give up a first-round pick and not get a ton in return, other than just the player, knowing that the second pick in the draft is a very, very valuable pick.”

The 49ers interest in Beckham should come as no surprise. They are in desperate need of some firepower in their receiving corps.

Although they already have one of the league's best tight ends in George Kittle, they will continue to have a tough time scoring on offense without a dependable No.1 option on the outside. Beckham would have surely sufficed.

Unfortunately, the prospect of parting ways with the No.2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft was too much, even for a player of Beckham's caliber. The 49ers have a number of voids to fill on their roster this offseason.

They have an opportunity to select a potential impact player early on or even flip it for more picks in return if they feel they can afford to slide back a few spots.
