The San Francisco 49ers entered the NFL offseason as one of the teams strapped with a plethora of salary cap space to make moves to reshape their roster ahead of the 2018 campaign. The front office is expected to be highly active through free agency to add several more pieces to the puzzle.

The 49ers have already begun that process by signing former Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman to a three-year deal. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team has added another significant piece to the mix with the expected addition of former New York Giants offensive lineman Weston Richburg on a five-year deal.

The acquisition of Richburg will help beef up the offensive line to provide quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo more protection. The decision to sign the 26-year-old is a bit of risk given that he only played four games last season due to a concussion that saw him be placed on the injured reserve in early November. He had hoped to return for the last nine games of the 2017 season, but the Giants decided to shut him down instead.

Richburg was selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft and had missed just one game in his first three seasons before the 2017 campaign. He had spent much of his rookie year as the starting center and has spent the last few seasons playing in between both center and guard. His addition will likely mean that either he or Daniel Kilgore, who the team signed a three-year contract extension with back in February, will have to move to guard in next season.

Nonetheless, this move should help provide more stability along the offensive line that they lacked last season. This is likely the first of several signings in free agency with the team still possessing a significant amount of salary cap space to add more talent via free agency or trade.
