The San Francisco 49ers lost their top two running backs to injuries during Sunday's win over the New York Jets.

Raheem Mostert suffered a sprained MCL and is not expected to play this upcoming Sunday against the New York Giants.

Meanwhile, the Niners are equally concerned with the status of Tevin Coleman. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Coleman is expected to miss “multiple weeks” after suffering a knee injury against the Giants.

Schefter did not include Coleman's official diagnosis, but Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan previously said the back is awaiting MRI results.

The 49ers lost multiple other players to injury on Sunday, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas.

Fortunately, the Niners entered the year with backfield depth, even after trading Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins.

Jerick McKinnon missed the entirety of the 2018 and 2019 seasons, but he is back to full strength and figures to be the feature back against the Giants.

McKinnon has looked explosive in brief stints. He rushed three times for 24 yards and added three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals, and also rushed for 77 yards and a score against the Jets. McKinnon has also served as the team's kick returner.

The Niners might get Mostert back in the short term, but it sounds as if Coleman's injury is more severe, which should increase McKinnon's role even once Mostert reenters the fold.

San Francisco's punishing rushing attack has taken a hit over the past couple days, but the Niners will hope McKinnon can help carry the load going forward.
