Any San Francisco 49ers fans hoping for a possible change at the quarterback position this offseason are likely to be disappointed. 49ers general manager John Lynch suggested Monday the team still plans to go forward with Jimmy Garoppolo under center.

Garoppolo is under contract through 2022 with the 49ers, though he carries just over $4 million in combined dead cap value over the next two seasons, per Spotrac.

In essence, the 49ers could move on from Garoppolo while saving cap and possibly looking to add a Matthew Stafford or other quarterbacks expected to be available this upcoming offseason.

However, Lynch and the 49ers appear to be sticking to their guns. Realistically, it is hard to blame them.

Garoppolo played in just six games this season due to injury. He went 3-3 in those starts, completing over 67 percent of his attempts with the 49ers for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns against five interceptions.

The rather pedestrian numbers seemed to mark a step back from Garoppolo's 2019 49ers campaign, when he completed over 69 percent of his attempts and also averaged 8.4 yards gained per pass attempt, compared to 7.8 in 2020.

There are also the health concerns. Garoppolo has already dealt with a multitude of injuries during his 49ers tenure, most recently the ankle issue that kept him out for the majority of this past season.

Is it worth it for the 49ers to invest so much money in a quarterback (over $53 million the next two years) entering his age-30 season when there are durability questions and he has yet to really make a big leap? Lynch suggested once again Garoppolo is worth that investment.

The 49ers will hope for better health next year as they look to return to the top of the NFC.
