The San Francisco 49ers won't be able to franchise tag Trent Williams after the season because of the new contract that was worked out, according to Field Yates of ESPN. The goal for both sides is still a long-term deal, but that hasn't been worked out quite yet.

Williams officially passed his physical a few days back and signed the restricted deal, so the 49ers now officially have their replacement for Joe Staley.

The new restricted deal makes a lot of sense for Trent Williams because of what happened with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins still had control over Williams when he was going through his contract dispute with the team, and it's clear at this point he wants to have a little say. As part of the agreement, half of Williams' contract is guaranteed for the 2020 season. Before the restructuring of the contract, none of Williams' contract was guaranteed.

Last season, Williams said he was ready to return and play for the Redskins before he was played on the NFI list. Williams said he was waiting for his new helmet but he was placed on the list before it came in:

“I was under the impression my new helmet was coming in that Tuesday, and then I was put on the NFI that Saturday, I believe, or Friday, I don't remember. I was put on NFI right before I could even get the helmet to get back out there. It was a bummer but figured it was just how it was supposed to work out.”

The hope for the 49ers is that Williams will go back to his Pro Bowl form that he played at in the nation's capital.
