San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance's first career pass went about as well as he and the team could've hoped, as it ended in a touchdown off of a reception from wide receiver Trent Sherfield in the first quarter of Sunday's week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

The no. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft came in for veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo midway through the first quarter, finding Sherfield on a short left pass for a five-yard touchdown. Placekicker Robbie Gould would score the extra point, giving San Francisco an early 7-0 lead.

Expectations were high coming into the season for Lance, and rightfully so after the success he had at North Dakota State. 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan seems to have faith in the rookie, letting him see some action early in their week 1 matchup by alternating between he and Garoppolo. If this is any indication of his play throughout the season, it wouldn't be surprising if the rookie becomes the starting quarterback before too long.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff would go on to find tight end T.J. Hockenson for a six-yard touchdown near the start of the second quarter. The extra point was good from placekicker Austin Seibert, tying the game.
