San Francisco 49ers rookie Trey Lance had the viral moment in their preseason opener when he connected with wide receiver Trent Sherfield on an 80-yard touchdown that blew up social media.

Lance played well in his first NFL action and it has only sparked more whispers about whether or not the rookie could start over Jimmy Garoppolo when Week 1 rolls around for the 49ers.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked Sunday when Lance can expect to see more first team reps for the 49ers. Per, ProFootballTalk, Shanahan kept his answer fairly hidden.

“I don’t know,” Shanahan said. “I haven’t really defined that for myself either. Just when I think it feels right, when he seems ready, when I think the team seems ready. I mean, we’ll continue to mix him in there. But I don’t plan on just doing that completely. But Trey, what he showed in that game is, you know, I wish I could have left them there longer. I know he enjoys playing and he’s only been able to play one game in over a year, but I think it was good for him to get out. I think he started out good, got a little excited sometimes which he does. And you get a little excited, some of your technique and stuff you lose which will be fun to watch with him.”

Regardless of whether or not Lance starts Week 1, the 49ers traded up to draft him in the first round for a reason. And that reason is to have him be the future franchise quarterback in San Francisco. If he keeps impressing over the next two preseason games, it may become very difficult for Shanahan to not tab the rookie as the season opening starter.
